We're living in two worlds, you and I.

There's the world we see (or are made to see) and then there's the one we sense (and occasionally catch a glimpse of), the latter of which is a far cry from the propaganda-driven reality manufactured by the government and its corporate sponsors, including the media.

Indeed, what most Americans perceive as life in America -- privileged, progressive and free -- is a far cry from reality, where economic inequality is growing, real agendas and real power are buried beneath layers of Orwellian doublespeak and corporate obfuscation, and "freedom," such that it is, is meted out in small, legalistic doses by militarized police armed to the teeth.

All is not as it seems.

Before I get on to the blatant lack of fair process, the first thing I must note was Julian's condition. I was badly shocked by just how much weight my friend has lost, by the speed his hair has receded and by the appearance of premature and vastly accelerated ageing. He has a pronounced limp I have never seen before. Since his arrest he has lost over 15 kg in weight.

But his physical appearance was not as shocking as his mental deterioration. When asked to give his name and date of birth, he struggled visibly over several seconds to recall both. I will come to the important content of his statement at the end of proceedings in due course, but his difficulty in making it was very evident; it was a real struggle for him to articulate the words and focus his train of thought.

Until yesterday I had always been quietly sceptical of those who claimed that Julian's treatment amounted to torture -- even of Nils Melzer, the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture -- and sceptical of those who suggested he may be subject to debilitating drug treatments. But having attended the trials in Uzbekistan of several victims of extreme torture, and having worked with survivors from Sierra Leone and elsewhere, I can tell you that yesterday changed my mind entirely and Julian exhibited exactly the symptoms of a torture victim brought blinking into the light, particularly in terms of disorientation, confusion, and the real struggle to assert free will through the fog of learned helplessness.

I'm reading one of the best books I've ever seen, historian Yuri Slezkine's The House of Government: A Saga of the Russian Revolution. It's a massive -- over 1,000 pages -- history of the Bolshevik movement, focusing on the people who lived in a vast apartment building, constructed across the Moskva River from the Kremlin, for party elites. In the 1930s, during the purges, it was the most dangerous address in the country. The secret police came for people there all the time.

The book has given me a breakthrough in understanding why so many people who grew up under communism are unnerved by what's going on in the West today, even if they can't all articulate it beyond expressing intense but inchoate anxiety about political correctness. Reading Slezkine, a UC-Berkeley historian, clarifies things immensely. Let me explain as concisely as I can. All of this is going into the book I'm working on, by the way.

In my book, I identify two main factors that make the "soft totalitarianism" we're drifting into different from the hard totalitarianism of the communist years. One is the vastly greater capabilities of surveillance technology, and its penetration into daily life in this current stage of capitalism. The other is the pseudo-religion of Social Justice, the holy trinity of which is Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. The mathematician James Lindsay last year wrote an insightful essay analyzing Social Justice ideology as a kind of postmodern religion??("faith system," he writes). Reading Slezkine on Bolshevism illuminates this with new depth.

To be clear, Social Justice religion is not the same thing as Bolshevism, which conquered a nation and turned it into a charnel house. But the psychological dynamics are so similar that I can understand now why Soviet-bloc emigres feel in their bones that something wicked is coming, and coming fast.

"Not only did Donald Trump not collude with Russia during the 2016 campaign, Russia didn't even interfere in the election at all. Both were framed by a conspiracy between Ukraine and the DNC. The server is the DNC server that the Russians hacked. It's 'missing', so the conspiracy theory goes, because a cybersecurity firm called Crowdstrike was part of the conspiracy and they made it look like the Russians had hacked the servers when in fact it was an inside job by a disgruntled DNC employee. And which employee? Seth Rich.

"You probably know this whole story, Russian propaganda channels and Wikileaks latched on to the idea that Rich, who all evidence suggests died the victim of a random street crime, was the disgruntled leaker and that he was later murdered by Democrats or people associated with the Clintons as part of the conspiracy.

"That is what this is about: Russia and Trump were framed. The real election interference was a conspiracy between the DNC and Ukraine. That was why the White House held up military aid. And if there's any question that this was an offhand remark by Mulvaney, remember: Trump explicitly invoked the "Crowdstrike server" in his call with Zelensky. That is what this is about."

The striking thing is that this 'conspiracy theory' is true, and the big issues aren't even debatable (I don't know where the Clinton server is, or how Trump got the idea it was in Ukraine, but its location is not an important part of the story). The earliest attacks on Trump, going back to the formulation of the pee tape, originated with Ukrainian intelligence, and later additions to the anti-Trump conspiracy were spread with the help of CrowdStrike and the Chalupa sisters and the Atlantic Council, all with strong Ukrainian and anti-Russian/Putin connections. All the overseas actors in this farce on both sides are either Ukrainian or from some non-Russia part of the USSR, all likely to be anti-Russian, yet all are invariably described by the Clintonistas and the (((media))) as 'Russians'. Even better, every player is a Khazar, and is either an out-and-out gangster, or very close to organized crime.

A doctor from Peru claims that recent advancements in brain chip technology could be due to "secret, forced, and illicit human experimentation" by a consortium of transnational tech companies and governments operating outside of the law.

A 2016 paper published in the Egyptian Journal of Internal Medicine warned that "secret, forced, and illicit human experimentation" could be happening in Latin America, where poverty stricken masses are routinely recruited for medical trials.

The paper, titled "The secret of neuroscience boom: Are there secret human experiments in Latin America?, was written by Dr. David Salinas Flores, MD, Professor of Medicine at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Peru.

Dr. Flores writes:

"...an objective analysis proposes as a possible explanation for the so-called neuroscientific boom the suspicion that transnational technological companies, in illegal association with the US government, the European Community, China and some Latin American governments, are developing, in Latin America, illegal and forced secret neuroscientific human experimentation..."

Dr. Flores concludes by warning his colleagues to "...investigate, be alert, and report possible inhuman neuroscientific experiments performed by economic powers in Third World countries."

South America has served as a test site for unregulated off shore drug trials for the pharmaceutical industry for many years. Peru has been described as a "paradise of human experimentation", and is riddled with corruption.

Tuesday was the final day of Jim Fetzer's defense against Lenny Pozner's libel lawsuit. I attended and??wrote up a "just the facts" report that evening. At almost the same moment I published my report, the jury came back with a verdict awarding close to half a million dollars to Lenny "Jim Fetzer gave me PTSD" Pozner.

Now it's time for an opinion piece. And as much as I sympathize with Mr. Pozner, assuming his account is accurate, my opinion is that Jim Fetzer got a raw deal... and that the reverberations of this case will be disastrous unless it is overturned.

The whole courtroom drama was carefully scripted and controlled to ensure that the jury, as well as onlookers and reporters, got to hear only one side of the story. Fetzer was never allowed to present his defense.

The family of Erin Valenti stopped its search on Saturday night, shortly after police reported that a body was found in South San Jose's Almaden Valley, the location where the 33-year-old tech entrepreneur went missing after a series of bewildering phone calls during an apparent mental health episode.

The San Jose Police Department reported finding a body inside a vehicle parked on the 6500 block of Bose Lane, only a half-mile from Valenti's last known location, near Almaden Expressway and Camden Avenue. Records show that the San Jose Fire Department responded to a medical call at 3:56 p.m. near 6582 Bose Lane.

"We talked to her for hours on and off" on Monday night, Valenti said. "Her thoughts were disconnected. She talked a mile a minute. She'd say I'm coming home for Thanksgiving, then in the next she was saying she's in the Matrix," a reference to a science fiction movie about a virtual reality world.

Seven South Bay cities are launching a regional public-safety radio system this month to improve communications among neighboring police officers and firefighters and their dispatch centers.

It will also encrypt radio transmissions to prevent active shooters and other criminals from monitoring officers’ movements and tactics.

A recent article in WCVB Channel 5 revealed that the “Safe Drivers Act” is designed for one purpose and that is to share everything a motorist has ever done with law enforcement nationwide.

Outside the Danvers branch of the Registry of Motor Vehicles on Tuesday, Congressman Seth Moulton publicly announced legislation he’s filed in hopes of making it easier for traffic safety officials to share information about drivers across state lines.

How Moulton plans to make it easier to share drivers’ personal information with law enforcement across the country is frightening.

Claiming Karl Marx was an agent controlled by David Urquhart for MI6 is absurd.

Urquhart died in 1877, Marx died in 1883, and MI6 didn't exist until 1909. Its predecessor, the Secret Service Bureau, was created in 1903 - and was rather informal at that.

The fact is, Marx was brought to London, and supported by Lord Rothschild - who had his own Europe-wide espionage network operating long before the British Government even dreamed of creating such a sordid entity.

Imagine you're taking an online business class -- the kind where you watch video lectures and then answer questions at the end. But this isn't a normal class, and you're not just watching the lectures: They're watching you back. Every time the facial recognition system decides that you look bored, distracted, or tuned out, it makes a note. And after each lecture, it only asks you about content from those moments.

This isn't a hypothetical system; it's a real one deployed by a company called Nestor. And if you don't like the sound of it, you're not alone. Neither do the actual students.

When I asked the man behind the system, French inventor Marcel Saucet, how the students in these classes feel about being watched, he admitted that they didn't like it. They felt violated and surveilled, he said, but he shrugged off any implication that it was his fault. "Everybody is doing this," he told me. "It's really early and shocking, but we cannot go against natural laws of evolution."

As a reporter who covers technology and the future, I constantly hear variations of this line as technologists attempt to apply the theory Charles Darwin made famous in biology to their own work. I'm told that there is a progression of technology, a movement that is bigger than any individual inventor or CEO. They say they are simply caught in a tide, swept along in a current they cannot fight. They say it inevitably leads them to facial recognition (now even being deployed on children), smart speakers that record your intimate conversations, and doorbells that narc on your neighbors. They say we can't blame these companies for the erosion of privacy or democracy or trust in public institutions -- that was all going to happen sooner or later.
